After a year of pundits, critics, and tech entrepreneurs proclaiming movie theaters as dead as the dial-up modem, the Music Box Theatre and MUBI beg to differ. Movie theaters remain vital places for entertainment, community-building, and simple human contact. And the Music Box remains the absolute best place to experience movies in all their grandeur--on the big screen, in 35mm with auditorium-filling sound. We've assembled two weeks of special programming, with an emphasis on films that demand to be experienced theatrically. Then, rather than craft a series about the “Magic of the Movies,” we’ve opted to deliver a line-up of films that explore the everyday existence of theaters and the people who work in them. From the projectionist to the ticket-taker to the teenager in the giant rubber ant head running up and down the aisles during a matinee, all of them contribute to our most democratic and shape-shifting art form.
For the first week, the Music Box will present everything from big-screen epics to stunning auteur pictures with worlds and landscapes meant to be shared in a darkened room upon a brightly lit screen. Titles will include Terrence Malick’s DAYS OF HEAVEN; Jacques Tati’s PLAYTIME; Orsen Welles’ TOUCH OF EVIL; and Akira Kurosawa’s rarely screened RAN, all of which will be played in 35mm. In addition, we’re bringing back the recently restored 4K DCP of Dario Argento’s SUSPIRIA.
During the second week—which we’re calling BEHIND THE SCREEN— we’ll allow viewers to enjoy the world of the movie theater, with stories that represent our love and passion for going to the cinema. Rich stories, twisting plots, compelling characters, and the love of pure cinema awaits you. Titles for this part of the series include William Castle’s THE TINGLER; Giuseppe Tornatore’s CINEMA PARADISO (original theatrical cut); Tsai Ming-Liang’s GOODBYE DRAGON INN; Sarah Jacobson’s MARY JANE’S NOT A VIRGIN ANYMORE (in 16mm); and Joe Dante’s MATINEE.
