Since 2014, Bruce Campbell's Horror Film Festival, the mid-wests largest cinematic horror gathering, has terrorized audiences with an annual slate of premiere films, guests, and bloodcurdling entertainment. In just three short years, the festival played host to the likes of: John Carpenter, Fede Alvarez, Eli Roth, Christopher Lloyd, Fred Dekker, Tom Holland, Barbara Crampton, William Sadler, Stephen Lang, comedian Doug Benson, and many more talented filmmakers from around the globe.

Leaving a trail of apocalyptic annihilation in the village of Rosemont, the festival is moving to Chicago's historic Music Box Theatre. One of the nation's most prestigious art house theatres, the year-round programming has offered genre fans some of the very finest cinematic experiences in digital, 35mm, and 70mm!

The A.V. Club Presents: Beyond the Room - Get Even

A FILM BY: John De Hart, James Paradise
WRITTEN BY: John De Hart
STARRING: John De Hart, Wings Hauser, William Smith

Tommy Wiseau and The Room have given us countless hours of joy over the years, but for the inaugural Cinepocalypse, The A.V. Club is opening the door and taking you “Beyond The Room” with a special presentation of Get Even, a.k.a. Road To Revenge, a.k.a. Champagne And Bullets.By day, John De Hart is a trial lawyer in Los Angeles. By night, he’s the writer, director, producer, composer, and star of this DIY action-romance opus. Shot mostly in 1993 and completed in 2007, Get Even features Satanic cults, corrupt cops, hot tubs, Shakespearean monologues, Wings Hauser laying down his personal philosophy while standing fully clothed in a swimming pool, and the life-changing magic of the “Shimmy Slide,” as performed by De Hart himself. Get Even has never received mainstream distribution and is only available from the director himself, so don’t miss your chance to see this cult-classic-in-the-making that will have you asking, “Who’s Hamlet? Who gives a shit?”

The Ambulance

A FILM BY: Larry Cohen
WRITTEN BY: Larry Cohen
STARRING: Eric Roberts, James Earl Jones, Megan Gallagher

***Rare 35mm Screening with Director Larry Cohen & Eric Roberts in Attendance***

Eric Roberts, James Earl Jones, and Janine Turner star in a typically colorful “high concept” thriller (with humor) from Larry Cohen, one of the most reliably entertaining indie filmmakers over the past 30+ years. While this one may not be as well-known as Cohen’s classics It’s Alive, Q, or The Stuff, it’s still a smoothly entertaining flick about a mysterious ambulance that keeps snatching up all the women in Roberts’ life. And man it goes to some appreciably weird places.

Applecart

A FILM BY: Brad Baruh

A whole bunch of indie horror veterans -- including Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator), Brea Grant (Beyond the Gates), AJ Bowen (The Signal), Daniel Roebuck (At the Devil’s Door), and Chase Williamson (John Dies at the End) -- get together for what seems like a fairly standard “cabin in the woods” tale. And then it gets weird. And weirder. And super gory. Let’s just leave it at that. Though the film recently screened at Fantastic Fest, this all new cut of the film has underwent radical changes, and truly must be seen to be believed! In other words, this one's pretty dark.

Foxy Brown

A FILM BY: Jack Hill
WRITTEN BY: Jack Hill
STARRING: Pam Grier, Antonio Fargas, Peter Brown

***Antonia Fargas in Attendance***

Cult legend, blaxploitation goddess, and overall bad-ass actor Pam Grier stars as a very angry woman who heads out for revenge after her boyfriend is murdered by a cabal of scumbags who run everything from prostitution rings to drug dens. It gets very gruesome and unpleasant on occasion, but Ms. Grier always brings some steely class to even the cheesiest of moments. Plus our guest Antonio Fargas does some fine work as our anti-heroine’s conflicted (and untrustworthy) brother.

***Midwest Premiere | Talent in Attendance***

There's been a great little flood of Irish horror films over the past several years, and their latest offering is just another example of how to combine classy scares and intermittent nastiness into one good thriller. The sordid lives of an addict, an ex-con, and a Luchador collide when an organ harvesting caper goes very, very wrong in this wildly clever - and incredibly brutal - modern LA noir.

Stephen King's first (and last) directorial effort is certainly something to see. And hear. And (almost) smell! It's a goofy, grungy, gory tale of homicidal machines, several ill-fated humans, and the greasy truck stop diner where "vehicular homicide" is the special of the day.

Mohawk

A FILM BY: Ted Geoghegan
WRITTEN BY: Ted Geoghegan, Grady Hendrix (co-writer)
STARRING: Kaniehtiio Horn, Ezra Buzzington, Eamon Farren

***U.S. Premiere | Talent in Attendance***

The writer/director of the recent festival favorite We Are Still Here returns with his sophomore effort, a powerful & grisly period piece set during The War of 1812. Geoghegans's film digs deep into the relevant themes of survival against persecution, as a young Mohawk woman (played by the wonderful KANIEHTIIO HORN), and her two lovers are caught in battle against a squad of American soldiers, as they struggle to maintain their neutrality on their invaded homeland. And while it's not exactly a horror film by definition, it does document a more realistic horror, and is certainly intense, violent, suspenseful, and unsettling enough to satisfy any genre fan.

Based on characters created by Marvel comic book author Danilo Beyruth, this atmospheric and suspenseful genre film also functions as an allegory to our battles within. Poor Agnes

A FILM BY: Navin Ramaswaran
WRITTEN BY: James Gordon Ross
STARRING: Lora Burke, Robert Notman, Amy Marie Wallace

***U.S. Premiere | Talent in Attendance***

We've all seen our share of indie horror films in which a male serial killer locks a female victim (or two) in his basement -- and the results are usually a pretty standard horror flick. Navin Ramaswaran's entry into the sub-genre offers an enticing gender switch: not only is the lunatic a woman this time around, but -- like her male counterparts -- she's not above catering to her basest instincts. Newcomer Lora Burke delivers a fascinating, freaky, tour-de-force performance that evokes the unhinged madness of Michael Rooker (Henry) and Christian Bale (American Psycho).

Producers Challenge

A FILM BY: JD Lifshitz, Raphael Margules

***World Premiere***

The production team at Boulderlight Pictures consists of 23-year-old JD Lifshitz and 24-year-old Raphael Margules. Alongside both Contracted films, they also produced Bad Match, which received its premiere at FrightFest; the upcoming Dismissed (starring Dylan Krause); and numerous other genre titles.

With their youthful exuberance and heavy output, we've issued them a challenge: produce a genre feature exclusively for Cinepocalypse 2017. There are no parameters other than it must be a feature-length midnight movie, and that they must begin production immediately upon release of this announcement.

Together, attendees of Cinepocalypse will experience the World Premiere of this yet-untitled (and unwritten...and unfilmed) production during a special midnight slot in this year's inaugural festival!

Psychopaths

A FILM BY: Mickey Keating
WRITTEN BY: Mickey Keating
STARRING: Ashley Bell, Jamie Ann Burke, Larry Fessenden

***Midwest Premiere***

Prolific indie genre machine Mickey Keating (Pod, Darling, Carnage Park) returns with a tale of psychos run amok. Yes, multiple disparate psychos. It’s the execution of an infamous serial killer that somehow inspires a half-dozen maniacs to lose their collective minds and commit all sorts of nasty acts, but this is not your standard body count movie. Loaded with odd digressions, fractured narratives, and some enjoyably abstract weirdness, this is maybe Mr. Keating’s strangest, creepiest movie yet, which is of course meant as a compliment.

Once we whittled down our hundreds of short film submissions into a small pile of favorites, we realized that a decent batch of 'em were directed by women. So why not showcase all of 'em in one wildly eclectic block? These shorts cover a wide array of subjects, from small-town psychos to otherworldly mysteries, and all sorts of insanity in between, and each one is evidence of some deep (dark) talents behind the camera.

STARRING: Reza Brojerdi, Erkan Acar, Xenia Assenza

***North American Premiere | Talent in Attendance***

Take a dash of Tarantino, a splash of Coen brothers, and metric ton of meta-textual self-awareness, and a fast-paced series of humorously violent misadventures, and you're halfway to grasping the magnificent madness of this bizarre German import. Suffice to say that about a dozen lowlife characters all want revenge on the others, but along the way they must contend with assassins, madmen, a blood-covered angel, and an electric-powered superhero.

The Terror of Hallow's Eve

A FILM BY: Todd Tucker
WRITTEN BY: Ronald L. Halvas, Todd Tucker
STARRING: Caleb Thomas, Sarah Lancaster, Annie Read
***North American Premiere | Talent in Attendance | Preceded by the short film YOUR DATE IS HERE***

Young Timmy Stevens is socially awkward, obsessed with horror movies, and (of course) frequently targeted for abuse by a nasty gang of bullies. But he's about to get his revenge in full-bore (Tales From the Crypt meets Goosebumps) fashion after unleashing an evil creature known as The Trickster on Halloween Night. Young Caleb Thomas (as Timmy) and genre veteran Doug Jones (as the monster) provide fine performances, but the star here is the wide array of surprisingly effective creature FX and an obvious affection for old-school '80s mayhem.

Tragedy Girls

A FILM BY: Tyler MacIntyre
WRITTEN BY: Chris Lee Hill, Tyler MacIntyre
STARRING: Kevin Durand, Josh Hutcherson, Brianna Hildebrand

***Illinois Premiere | Talent in Attendance***

The last time we saw Alexandra Shipp and Brianna Hildebrand they were playing kick-ass superheroes (Storm in X-Men: Apocalypse and Negasonic Teenage Warhead in Deadpool, respectively) but here they're teaming up to portray two of the most mischievously homicidal sociopaths since those two nutbags in the original Scream. These ferocious females kidnap a raving psycho, kill half their class, and maintain a very successful social media presence -- for a little while anyway. And then, of course, things fall apart -- in very gruesome and frequently funny fashion.

Trench 11

A FILM BY: Leo Scherman
WRITTEN BY: Matt Booi
STARRING: Rossif Sutherland, Karine Vanasse, Adam Hurtig

***Midwest Premiere***

A wartime setting always seems to add a nice sense of tone and tension to a horror tale, and that's certainly the case with this dark. claustrophobic, and unapologetically gruesome Canadian import. We may start out on slightly familiar ground, but once our American explorers -- and our German villains -- find themselves trapped deep underground with a horrific biological aberration, things get all sorts of unpredictably insane.

Veronica

A FILM BY: Paco Plaza
WRITTEN BY: Fernando Navarro, Paco Plaza
STARRING: Sandra Escacena, Bruna González, Claudia Placer

***Midwest Premiere | Preceded by the short film WE SUMMONED A DEMON***

Paco Plaza (co-creator of the widely adored [REC] franchise) returns with his first feature in several years, and while it's a tale that involves ghosts, possessions, Ouija boards, and all sorts of terrifying occult malfeasance, you can check those expectations at the door, because Plaza and his team use those ingredients (among others) to cook up a beautifully frightening good time.
