2001: A Space Odyssey

A FILM BY: Stanley Kubrick
WRITTEN BY: Stanley Kubrick (screenplay), Arthur C. Clarke (screenplay)
STARRING: Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester

Brand new 70mm DTS print!

Director Stanley Kubrick spent four years makng 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, drowning himself in sci-fi films and novels while developing the script with Arthur C. Clarke, though the finished product removes much of the dialog. Nearly all of the special effects shots were done in camera, eliminating the need for blue screen, matte, and optical shots. Shot in Super Panavision, 2001 is the perfect introduction to the 70mm format and the experience of seeing films with an audience.

To honor our commitment to film projection, the Music Box is very pleased to have commissioned a brand new 70mm DTS print of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY from Warner Brothers, produced at Fotokem, the last full service 65/70mm lab in the United States. We've often hyped rare film screenings as the last ever time a print may screen, but we're very happy to say we can guarantee 2001 will have a home in 70mm in Chicago for the forseeable future. See it for the first time, or the thirtieth!

The Agony and the Ecstasy

WRITTEN BY: Irving Stone (based on the novel: "The Agony and the Ecstasy" by), Philip Dunne (screen story and screenplay)
STARRING: Charlton Heston, Rex Harrison, Diane Cilento
70mm with DTS Sound from Twentieth Century Fox
“We are harlots always peddling beauty at the doorsteps of the mighty.” How much verbal abuse did Charleton Heston have to take from Rex Harrison before the Sistine Chapel was finished? About 8 reels worth. Harrison is Pope Julius II, and Heston is Michelangelo in THE THIRD MAN director Carol Reed’s adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same name. With cinematography by Leon Shamroy (CLEOPATRA, PLANET OF THE APES), and music by Alex North (SPARTACUS).

Hook

A FILM BY: Steven Spielberg
WRITTEN BY: J.M. Barrie (books), J.M. Barrie (play)
STARRING: Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, Julia Roberts, Bob Hoskins
70mm Blowup with Magnetic Sound from Sony Pictures Repertory

Long before live-action fairy tale reboots filled the multiplex, there was HOOK. Robin Williams is a now-grown Peter Pan in denial of his past high-flying adventures, who must return to Neverland to save his children from Captain Hook, played with equal parts pomp and self-loathing by Dustin Hoffman. Steven Spielberg’s film doesn’t shy away from the melancholy of growing up, but is packed with enough fun and imagination to make sure you leave saying, “Bangerang!”

Interstellar

A FILM BY: Christopher Nolan
WRITTEN BY: Jonathan Nolan, Christopher Nolan
STARRING: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain
70mm with DTS Sound from Paramount

A midwestern space melodrama set in the distant and desolate future, INTERSTELLAR stars Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway as two astronauts who leave their families behind in search of habitable worlds for the starving human race. In the era of bloated, self-deflating, CGI-infested blockbusters, INTERSTELLAR is a welcome anomaly: uncompromising, expansive, and very genuinely moving. Shot on 35mm, Vistavision, 65mm, and IMAX film with lab work by Fotokem.

STARRING: Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman, John C. Reilly
Featuring a Q&A with Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts on July 15th at 8pm!
70mm with DTS Sound from Warner Brothers
Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, John C. Reilly, and John Goodman star in the most unhinged version of KING KONG yet. Set near the end of the Vietnam War, it’s like APOCALYPSE NOW only with a giant ape. One of a handful of recent 70mm Blowups from Warner Brothers (along with BATMAN V. SUPERMAN, FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM and WONDER WOMAN), SKULL ISLANDblends digital capture with photochemical projection, yielding a significantly sharper, higher contrast image than DCP engagements. Kong Rules!

Lord Jim

A FILM BY: Richard Brooks
WRITTEN BY: Joseph Conrad (novel), Richard Brooks (written for the screen by)
STARRING: Peter O'Toole, James Mason, Curd Jürgens
70mm with Magnetic Sound from Sony Pictures Repertory
Peter O’Toole plays Lord Jim, a 19th century seaman who spends his life trying to redeem himself after abandoning his sinking ship. Shot on location in Angkor Wat, Cambodia, Hong Kong, and Malaysia, O’Toole describes the shoot in horror: “Sheer hell. A nightmare. There we were, all of us, knee deep in lizards and all kinds of horrible insects. And everyone hating us. Awful.” With James Mason, Eli Wallach, and Akim Tamiroff. This print was made from the original camera negative!

STARRING: Andie MacDowell, Julianne Moore, Tim Robbins, Frances McDormand, Robert Downey Jr, Jack Lemmon, Tom Waits, Lily Tomlin
70mm with Magnetic Sound from the Chicago Film Society, permission from Warner Brothers

Adapting nine stories and a poem from Raymond Carver and transposing the action from the Pacific Northwest to sprawling working class Los Angeles, Robert Altman crafts an eccentric epic which he alone could pull off. SHORT CUTS finds the director returning to the intersecting tableau style of NASHVILLE and A WEDDING, this time with twenty-two major characters, including spectacular turns by Lily Tomlin, Tom Waits, Jack Lemmon, Andie MacDowell, Lyle Lovett, Julianne Moore, and Frances McDormand.

Sleeping Beauty

A FILM BY: Clyde Geronimi
WRITTEN BY: Erdman Penner (story adaptation), Charles Perrault (story "Sleeping Beauty")
STARRING: Mary Costa, Bill Shirley, Eleanor Audley
70mm with Magnetic Sound from Disney
Walt Disney’s second widescreen production doesn’t mess around. Following the 1955 CinemaScope LADY AND THE TRAMP, SLEEPING BEAUTY was shot in Super Technirama 70, a format used on mega productions like SPARTACUS and THE KING OF KINGS, here giving a tremendous amount of depth to Disney’s beautiful multi-plane compositions. Maleficent never looked so terrifying! A once in a lifetime screening of Disney’s only 70mm print- bring your kids!

Spartacus

A FILM BY: Stanley Kubrick
WRITTEN BY: Dalton Trumbo (screenplay), Howard Fast (based on the novel by)
STARRING: Kirk Douglas, Laurence Olivier, Jean Simmons, Tony Curtis
70mm with Magnetic Sound from Universal
Stanley Kubrick was only thirty years old when he directed SPARTACUS, Kirk Douglas and Universal Studio’s answer to BEN HUR, shot in Super Technirama 70 with a cast of 10,500 people. An allegory for the Hollywood Blacklist that simultaneously helped end it, SPARTACUS is tense, brutal, and beautiful. This 1991 reconstruction restores many of the most gruesome battle scenes, originally removed after horrifying audiences at preview screenings. With Charles Laughton, Laurence Olivier, Jean Simmons, an Oscar-winning Peter Ustinov, and Kirk Douglas as SPARTACUS.

Top Gun

A FILM BY: Tony Scott
WRITTEN BY: Jim Cash, Jack Epps Jr.
STARRING: Tom Cruise, Anthony Edwards, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer

70mm Blowup with Magnetic Sound from Paramount

In one of the loudest, dumbest, and sweatiest of all 80s action films, Tom Cruise stars as Maverick, a flying ace at Top Gun Naval Flying School. Directed by the great Tony Scott (THE HUNGER, TRUE ROMANCE, UNSTOPPABLE), TOP GUN was added to the National Film Registry in 2015 for kicking ass. The dogfights and aerial stunts are among the best ever filmed, and the Navy reported that recruitment went up 500% after the film’s release. With Val Kilmer, Tim Robbins, and Kelly McGillis.

West Side Story

A FILM BY: Jerome Robbins, Robert Wise
WRITTEN BY: Ernest Lehman (screenplay), Arthur Laurents (book)
STARRING: Natalie Wood, George Chakiris, Richard Beymer
70mm with DTS Sound from Park Circus

Adapted from the incredibly successful Broadway play, even the magnificent 70mm frame has trouble containing the raw energy of WEST SIDE STORY. Robert Wise (THE SOUND OF MUSIC, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL) co-directed with Jerome Robbins, who had a nervous breakdown midway through production - the results are visible on screen, and it was worth it. For our money, this is one of the best looking prints of the festival, it also has the best end credits sequence by Saul Bass.
