Co-presented by The Satanic Temple Illinois
In Alan Parker’s steamy neo-noir Angel Heart, Mickey Rourke embodies private detective Harry Angel, who’s hired by the intriguing and sinister Louis Cyphre (Robert De Niro, absolutely living for every moment) to track down a missing musician who owes him a debt. Soon, Angel begins to realize things are far darker and more horrifying than he could've imagined. But by that point, it's too late.
Transplanting William Hjortsberg's novel Falling Angel to the deliciously sweaty and mysterious setting of New Orleans, Angel Heart imbues its demonic tale with a sensuous depravity that's evident from its opening moments. What follows is a nightmare logic noir-thriller that descends into a world of secrets, lies, and immeasurable darkness. With powerhouse performances from Rourke, De Niro, and Lisa Bonet, fully formed side-character turns from the likes of Brownie McGhee and Charlotte Rampling, sumptuous cinematography from Michael Seresin (Midnight Express, Tattoo), and seductive music from Trevor Jones and Courtney Pine, Angel Heart is a deeply unsettling gumbo of sex, dread, shocking violence, and the oppressive weight of loss.
Music Box is happy to have The Satanic Temple Illinois co-present Angel Heart for Halloween. Minister Adam will be on-hand to offer a Q&A after the screening to talk about The Satanic Temple, depictions of Satan in the media, and your questions. A portion of the proceeds from the screening will be donated to The Satanic Temple.
