San Quentin lifer Lee Umstetter (Nick Nolte) is inspired by a traveling theater group to write and direct his own play with his fellow prisoners. Lee is discovered by a  sympathetic newspaper critic (Rita Taggart). Her advocacy leads to his release, and the forming of his own theater troupe with former inmates. But, life on the outside is harder than expected.
