“The only church that truly feeds the soul, day in and day out, is the church of baseball." - Susan Sarandon as Annie Savoy in BULL DURHAM
"Sitting there in the sunshine and watching experts, good skilled tradesmen ply their trade," - Studs Terkel on Baseball
The intersection of baseball and cinema offers a rich tapestry of stories that explore the sport’s complexities, culture, and mythology. From romantic comedies to intense dramas, baseball films underline life’s universal themes, and reflect the game’s ability to unite and divide, inspire and discourage. The leisurely pace of the game matches the rhythms of cinema, capturing our lives through the intrigue of the diamond. To honor a new addition to this rich genre, EEPHUS (opening at the Music Box on March 21), we’ll be presenting some of our favorite heavy hitters all month long—exploring themes from the ethics of cheating, to the economics of self determination and baseball’s fraught relationship with gender and racial inclusivity. This series reflects the complex nature of baseball as America’s pastime and explores the undeniable allure of the game. It’s time to play ball!
