Anyone who’s ever worked in a fleapit cinema will instantly recognize the nondescript art house and its rag tag assortment of doofuses and drunks in MARY JANE’S NOT A VIRGIN ANYMORE, the sole feature from Sarah Jacobson, the self-proclaimed Queen of Underground Cinema, who would succumb to cancer at 32. Jacobson captures the camaraderie and drudgery of minimum wage work, the raw terribleness of fumbling teen sex, and the ecstatic pleasure of growing up with a unique filmmaking voice that recalls the directness of a punk zine. MARY JANE had its world premiere at the 1996 edition of the Chicago Underground Film Festival, and has been haunting the late show circuit ever since.
