“For all the wonderful achievements of the computer, the process creates creatures that are too realistic and for me that makes them unreal because they have lost one vital element - a dream quality. Fantasy, for me, is realizing strange beings that are so removed from the 21st century. . . . Fantastical creatures where the unreal quality becomes even more vital. Stop-motion supplies the perfect breath of life for them, offering a look of pure fantasy because their movements are beyond anything we know.” - Ray Harryhausen
With two new stop motion releases coming to the Music Box this summer – Mad God, a decades-long production from the visual effects masters at Tippett Studio, and the googly-eyed YouTube-sensation (now a feature film!) Marcel the Shell with Shoes On – we’re showcasing some of our favorite stop motion films, featuring the pioneering work from the likes of Phil Tippett (RoboCop), Ray Harryhausen (Jason and the Argonauts), Aardman Studios (Wallace and Gromit), and more. From the original King Kong (1933) to Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) this series spans nearly 90 years of eerily beautiful and ageless films. Come to appreciate the skilled labor of countless animators, and stay to indulge a base love of creature features, a chance to look up at the screen at a freaky monster and echo the words of Michael Moriarty in Q, “Eat ‘em Eat ‘em! Crunch! Crunch!”
