Whether it’s the late 60’s, or the mid-90’s, no one would ever deny the fact that hoards of horny teens spend much of their time and focus on getting laid. For better or for worse, time and time again we see this story played out cinematically with different beats, rhythms, and results. With French filmmaker Claire Denis, she situates her youthful protagonists outside of a US army base in France in the late 60’s, two girls who learn that a friend of theirs has had sex for the first time, which prompts them to ask one of their older brothers to get them into a party that night, in the hopes they can lose their virginity there. Years later in America, Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont would place their characters inside Melissa Joan Hart’s parents’ house, as graduates of Huntington Hill High School gather to celebrate the end of their carefree days, and hopefully, get their goodies rocked. CAN’T HARDLY WAIT features a deliriously stacked cast of “before-they-were-famous” talent that is too long to go into detail here, but Ethan Embry, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Lauren Ambrose, and Seth Green anchor this roster of up-and-comers. US GO HOME features Denis’ regulars Alice Houri, Grégoire Colin (performing one of the most infectious dance scenes in cinema history), and Vincent Gallo, who shows up late in the narrative in a memorable supporting role. Both films silhouette their characters against backdrops of wall-to-wall musical hits from their respective time periods. Both also display an unusual amount of care and sympathy for their young characters, with CAN’T HARDLY WAIT separating itself from the late 90’s sex-comedy pack that was much more focused on gross-out sight gags (along with tame, but frequent nudity). US GO HOME finds Denis in a softer and more humorous frame of mind than she’s known for, as she would return to her characters played by Houri and Colin two years later, in the more somber but no less great, NÉNETTE AND BONI. This is without a doubt the grandest house-party double feature ever presented to the silver screen, so grab your red solo cup and check your jimmy hat stock, because this is a raucous bash not to be missed.
