Chris Rock co-wrote and starred in this classic hip hop comedy about a gangsta rap trio reflecting back on the origins of their fame. CB4 (or “Cell Block 4”) was formed by three rap-obsessed youths from the fictional town of Locash, CA, when one of them witnesses a psychotic local drug dealer and club owner named Gusto (a beautifully crazed Charlie Murphy) get carted off to prison. They steal his name, his look, and his story, and become the hottest act around with earworms like “Straight Outta Locash” and “Sweat from My Balls”. When the real Gusto escapes from prison in order to enact revenge, CB4 must defend their image and their lives. Rock co-stars with Allen Payne (New Jack City), Deezer D (Fear of a Black Hat) as fellow rappers “Dead Mike” and “Stab Master Arson,” respectively. With Phil Hartman as a corrupt politician and a litany of brief cameos by hip hop stars as themselves. Directed with a hilarious surrealist bent by former music video director Tamra Davis (Billy Madison, Half Baked). A satire made from a place of true love for hip hop.
