Unwanted and misbegotten, the bastard child of the HELLRAISER series was disowned by its director, who chose to take the pseudonymous credit of “Alan Smithee.” The film’s biggest sin, if you can call it that, is its ambition, as it spans centuries with multiple plot lines set in 18th-century Paris, 20th-century Manhattan, and the year 2127…IN SPACE! Yes, like a good horror franchise should, HELLRAISER blasts into orbit in its fourth installment, taking its moody goth attitude with it. Yes, it’s melodramatic. Yes, it’s nonsensical. That’s why we love it.
