New 4k Restoration | Picked by Reece Thornbery, Projection
Reece says: As Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger began planning what would eventually become A Matter of Life and Death (1946), they found themselves stymied by a shortage of Technicolor cameras and film stock, which were being used for training films for the war effort. Although the fighting was still raging, the Allied advance gave Britain hope that the end was near and out of that swirling mix of uncertainty and an emerging post war optimism came the film they made in the interim: I Know Where I’m Going!
Much like the filmmakers, Joan Webster (Wendy Hiller) finds her plans undone by uncontrollable forces. She’s a confident young woman determined to marry a wealthy industrialist. However, on the way to the wedding inclement weather strands her on the beautiful and haunting Isle of Mull in the Scottish Hebrides. There she meets Torquil MacNeil (Roger Livesey), and fate slowly begins to chip away at her once ironclad certainty about who she is and where she’s going.
