In 2005, storied Chicago indie label Thrill Jockey released Looking For a Thrill: An Anthology of Inspiration. It's a totally ambitious, charmingly lo-fi DVD compilation of interviews with over a hundred musicians from various scenes and genres, telling the stories of their personal artistic epiphanies — from Thurston Moore's first encounter with punk rock, to Bjork's first encounter with car alarms.
For this almost-20th-anniversary of the DVD's release, host Rico Gagliano presents a selection of the DVD's best moments, then talks live about inspiration and Chicago music with esteemed locals, including two of the THRILL's original interviewees: Janet Beveridge Bean (11th Dream Day) and Doug McCombs (11th Dream Day, Tortoise).
