Joan Crawford provides the last word in motherly sacrifice in this perverse noir melodrama of spoiled teenagers, loutish husbands, and chain restaurants. Later re-made as a Todd Haynes miniseries with Kate Winslet, the Curtiz original is a concentrated powerhouse with an excellent grasp of the minute gradations of Southern California social hierarchy.
