Glitz and glamour abound in Baz Luhrmann’s dizzying spectacle, MOULIN ROUGE! Follow Christian (Ewan McGregor) as he joins a group of Bohemians in the search for truth, beauty, freedom, and love. His journey leads him to Satine (played effervescently by Nicole Kidman), the star performer of the Moulin Rouge, and the two begin their doomed affair, soundtracked by some of the biggest hits in the history of popular music and heightened by frenetic editing, dazzling sets, colorful costumes, and a bevy of unforgettable performances. Released in 2001, the film leans into the theatrical nature of the medium, emphasizing the camp and absurdity inherent to musicals, and turning the dial up to 100. In turn, MOULIN ROUGE! inspired a renaissance of live-action movie musicals in the ensuing decade. Luhrmann’s vision of musical melodrama is uniquely inspired by everything from Puccini’s La Boheme to the music video boom of the 1980s, culminating in the original song “Come What May,” one of the most romantic ballads ever committed to film. -Zack Paslay
