A Part of The Music Box 70mm Film Festival 2022
70mm Blowup with Magnetic Sound from Sony Pictures Repertory
STARMAN changed hands more times than you can shake a stick at before eventually finding its director in horror-master John Carpenter, who brought to the screen a surprisingly romantic road movie. Karen Allen plays a recently widowed painter living in rural Wisconsin who receives an unwanted visitor from the stars, brought to earth by the messages of Voyager. The starman (played by Jeff Bridges) takes the form of her recently deceased husband, and soon the two of them are on a cross-country race against time with the US government close behind. STARMAN is a beautiful example of a lesser-appreciated Carpenter specialty–complicated and tender relationships evolving during unbelievable circumstances–and Bridges and Allen are perfect vessels for it. It’s a film with big action and even bigger feelings, just the right candidate for the 70mm treatment.
