Jet Li and Chin Siu-ho are two young Shaolin monks unjustly kicked out of the monastery and forced to adapt to live in the secular world. The power-hungry Chin becomes a soldier for an evil eunuch, a betrayal of Buddhist principles that literally causes Li to lose his mind. With the help of some local rebels, including Michelle Yeoh, Li regains his stability, and meanwhile invents the Tai-Chi style of fighting, which he uses to defeat his former friend. - Hong Kong Babylon

A hallucinatory tapestry – the closest it comes to realism is when goddess/antichrist Brigitte Lin says ‘Give me your hearts,’ and they obligingly explode out of the chests of several men. Uneven, to be sure; but Ching Siu-tung demands to be ranked with the most idiosyncratic visionaries in film history.
