Director Charlie Ahearn in Person for a Post-Film Q&A moderated by members of the team behind “Midway: The Story of Chicago Hip-Hop”

“It’s about time we got some publicity for this goddamn rap shit. People rappin’ man, us out there on the subways making things look all beautiful.” - Fab 5 Freddy

This now iconic film, widely considered the first hip hop movie ever made, is the real deal. A low-budget, shot on 16mm, non-fiction/teen drama hybrid starring and made by real-life legends of the early-‘80s NYC hip hop scene. It explodes with youthful energy, hustle, and DIY spirit, a portrait of the scene in its utopian early days. Starring hip hop pioneer Fab 5 Freddy (who also produced) and graffiti artists Lee Quiñones and Sandra Fabara (aka Lady Pink), and featuring appearances by Grandmaster Flash, Rock Steady Crew, The Cold Crush Brothers, Queen Lisa Lee, and Busy Bee Starski. Wild Style would set the bar almost unreachably high for every hip hop film that followed.
