"Fuck a book," says star DMX, and indeed this is post-verbal filmmaking, with vital plot points rendered in Jamaican patois. BELLY opens with a blacklight nightclub stickup set to a cappella vocal gymnastics, and director Hype Williams (auteur of shiny-suit-era Bad Boy music videos) doesn't allow a routine frame past the velvet rope in his one-of-a-kind, Alizé-and-mushrooms swirl of millennial Manhattan and dancehall reggae. - BAM
Written by Anthony Bodden, Nas, and director Hype Williams, Belly is an endlessly stylish film that buckles audiences into the backseat of a ‘97 Mercedes Benz driven by hip-hop legends Nas and the late DMX, as they wind their way through a haze of religious awakenings and criminal business. With unforgettable visuals by cinematographer Malik Hassan Sayeed (Clockers, He Got Game, Beyoncé: Formation), Belly was praised upon its release for its highly stylized neo-noir look. Light on plot but heavy on beautiful, immersive strangeness, Belly is a must see on the big screen. With cameos by Wu-Tang Clan member Method Man, and actress and singer T-Boz of TLC.
