Surprisingly tasteful (but not that tasteful) for a movie about a necrophiliac serial killer, Corpse Mania stands out as a rare example of an Asian giallo. The culprit? The legendary Shaw Brothers, who recruited The Boxer’s Omen director Kuei Chih-Hung for this perverse whodunnit about the hunt for a Jack the Ripper-esque murderer terrorizing the women at an upscale pleasure house in 19th-century Hong Kong. Combining the sublime soft-focus photography of a Mario Bava movie with the lurid gross-out scenes of Southeast Asian "black magic" horror, Corpse Mania is a grotesque fever dream of foggy nights, flashing blades, and maggots. So many maggots.
