Frank Perry's archetypically revisionist Western aims to set the record straight on the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Taking the familiar tale of Wyatt Earp (Stacy Keach), Doc Holliday (Harris Yulin), and Katie Elder (Faye Dunaway) that has inspired romantic fiction from filmmakers such as John Ford, DOC sets the tone early on when Dunaway describes her little corner of the world as "the ass end of the West." This Tombstone is no tribune of law and order, but a dirt pit where political opportunists and schemers smother civilization in its proverbial crib.
