October 12, 2025: masked and unidentified agents from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) seize a man on a residential street in Chicago without a warrant. His neighbors – some still wearing their bathrobes – try to stop the vehicle taking him from leaving their neighborhood. In the vein of the Oscar-nominated Incident, which recounted the killing of a man by the police, and employing an approach akin to forensic journalism, Bill Morrison dissects and reconstructs this moment of struggle using a skillful montage of footage from police body cameras as well as the mobile phones wielded by those trying to intervene. From inside the car, Sawyer Avenue, Sunday Afternoon viscerally conveys the chilling experience of the man’s illegal arrest and the helplessness of all those witnessing the violence of a state consumed by uncontrollable, security-driven nationalism. - Émilie Bujès, Visions du Réel, artistic director

Post-screening panel with organizers Rey Wences, Senior Director of Deportation Defense at the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR), and Antonio Gutierrez, co-founder of Organized Communities Against Deportations (OCAD), and Gabriel Paez, a teacher and featured neighbor in Sawyer Avenue, Sunday Afternoon. The panel will be moderated by María Inés Zamudio, reporter and co-producer of the film.

Following the screening and panel, join us in the Music Box Lounge and Garden where Invisible Institute will provide an opportunity for the audience to share their thoughts about the film and their experience with rapid response to ICE efforts in Chicago, and share resources for how to get involved with Latino Union.
