A seemingly familiar tale begins as a group of teenagers skip school and pile into a van to road trip to a concert, only to be met with water supply protests as they enter the countryside, along with ominous warnings from locals to get out while they still can. Most often discussed because of its status as the first splatter/gore film out of Pakistan and for its heart-on-the-sleeve homage to the likes of Tobe Hooper. Lucio Fulci, & George Romero, thankfully there's much more at play in this scrappy, low budget affair. With direct references to Pakistani horror films (going so far as to cast Rehan, the star of THE LIVING CORPSE aka DRACULA IN PAKISTAN in a small role), injections of contemporary Pakistani concerns such as rampant consumerism and man-made environmental decay, irresistible gothic trappings dipped in excessive gore-soaked set pieces, and an absolutely iconic killer, Zibahkhana gleefully balances a successful lampoon and celebration of the American slasher from a refreshingly outsider lense that's wholly its own. Round it out with assured direction from Omar Ali Khan, deftly balanced writing from Pete Tombs (MONDO MACABRO), irresistible performances from our main cast, and a wonderful score from none other than Stephen Thrower, and you're presented with an absolute blast of a film that's been overlooked for far too long.
