Part of the ’90s Western revival that followed in the wake of DANCES WITH WOLVES, GERONIMO: AN AMERICAN LEGEND elevates Native actor Wes Studi to center stage after his supporting roles in WOLVES and THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS. After decades of distorted portrayals, GERONIMO, which boasted the participation of over 200 Native actors, brought Hollywood mythos closer to the historical record. (Closer, but not quite there: even with the title role as the Apache freedom fighter, Studi is still fourth-billed, after Gene Hackman, Jason Patric, and Robert Duvall, but at least he’s ahead of SCHOOL TIES star Matt Damon.) Beautifully shot by Lloyd Ahern in the Moab, Utah locations that John Ford once used for WAGON MASTERand RIO GRANDE, GERONIMO is an essential Western from action master Walter Hill.
