Introduced by Zack Paslay
Towards the end of the last century, concerns mounted over the effect of cartoons on children’s minds. Parents across America reached for the remote when shows like The Simpsons, Ren & Stimpy, or Beavis and Butt-Head came on. But one cartoon drew more revulsion than the rest. And that was South Park—a program as inflammatory as it was intelligent (and remains so to this day). The big screen feature adaptation, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, depicts and head-on attacks such outsized puritanical outrage when the release of an R-rated animated movie in the fictional mountain town generates accusations of corrupting youth, and a mom-led backlash soon threatens to begin both World War III and the Biblical Apocalypse. Only Stan, Kyle, Kenny, and Cartman can save the day. Filmmakers Trey Parker and Matt Stone teamed with theatre composer Marc Shaiman to craft a world-class, crass, raunchy, Oscar-nominated movie musical—which acted as the perfect antidote to a decade of the Disney Animated Renaissance. Far and away, this is the smartest, funniest, and most culturally resonant movie you’ll ever see with a song about having sex with your uncle. Vive la Résistance!
