It’s the final show at Taipei’s enormous Fu Ho movie palace, and a small band of cinephiles, cruisers, and ghosts gather to watch a screening of King Hu’s wuxia landmark, DRAGON INN. Released after years of fin-de-siècle proclamations of cinema’s flagging relevance--but before the wholesale replacement of 35mm release prints with digital projection—Tsai’s melancholy ode to moviegoing returns to us now through a double layer of phantom nostalgia.
