July 24 & 25, we’re hitting the gas on a particular make and model of horror—Stephen King and the killer car subgenre—in a pair of blood-and-chrome bangers: Christine and Maximum Overdrive! Get in, freaks—we’re going on the ultimate cinematic joyride!
Every ticket includes a limited-edition pinback button (new design each night), and every show kicks off with speed trivia (Category: Automotive Horror) hosted by John McDevitt, and killer prizes donated by The Shadowboxery, Cryptid Craft Studio, Night Natalie, Full Bleed, and Drive-In Asylum!
In Maximum Overdrive, a comet’s glowing green tail lights up the night sky, and motor vehicles come alive to attack the human race and honk commands in Morse code. A few survivors hole up in a rest stop diner while a Happy Toyz delivery truck (with a jumbo Green Goblin mask sneering from the front grille) leads a convoy of big rigs in a reign of terror.
After a long streak of hit Stephen King adaptations by the likes of Brian De Palma (Carrie), Stanley Kubrick (The Shining), John Carpenter (Christine), and David Cronenberg (The Dead Zone), the author himself took the wheel for Maximum Overdrive, a comedic spin on his short story “Trucks,” and, even sweeter, he brought on board his favorite band AC/DC to write the film’s bone-grinding score and a custom hard rock battle cry—“Who Made Who”!
We’re also screening Christine (1983) on Friday, July 24 at 11:30pm!
Music Box Theatre screens films of all genres and from every era of cinema, both new releases and repertory. These films may sometimes contain upsetting, outdated, or offensive material. While we aim to introduce many of our screenings, we do not always provide warnings about potentially triggering content within the films we screen. We encourage our patrons to research the film before they attend using trailers, reviews, or content information found on Common Sense Media, IMDb and DoesTheDogDie.com.
