Released at the turn of the millennium, Guillermo del Toro’s third feature proved that could tingle spines with the best of them, using the somber backdrop of an orphanage in the dying days of the Spanish Civil War to tell a dark fairy tale about restless spirits demanding justice from beyond the grave. The historical setting and sober themes would recur in del Toro’s celebrated 2004 film Pan’s Labyrinth, while the haunting supernatural sequences are more reminiscent of del Toro’s other Gothic ghost story, Crimson Peak. In terms of pure, heart-stopping horror, however, it’s among the best — if not the best — in his filmography.
