John Keel’s chilling tale of high strangeness in West Virginia made it to the big screen in 2002, reborn as a millennial sci-fi thriller in the X-Files mold. Richard Gere stars as an inexplicably handsome reporter plagued by visions of a moth-like creature with glowing red eyes, alongside Laura Linney as the sheriff who’s here to make sure Mr. Big City doesn’t smear her town as a bunch of backwards hicks. This underrated gem takes some liberties with Keel’s original report, but still delves deep into the world of the bizarre, inexplicable, and just plain weird.
